How to edit items in the MediaDB

Once you have added items to your collection, your media will be displayed on the main page of the program. You can do any of the following to maintain your collection.

• Delete an item: Click on the book, DVD or game and press the 'Delete' key, or select the 'Delete' button on the toolbar, or Select 'Delete Item' from the 'Edit' menu.
• Edit: You can edit most fields directly on the table display. You can also bring up a dialog with all the information about an item. To do this, either double click the book, DVD or board game; or select the item and then either click 'Edit Item' on the toolbar or select 'Edit Item' under the 'Edit' menu. This will bring up a dialog showing all the attributes of the item you selected.
  
  Everything except the ISBN number can be edited. To add an author, director, feature or actor; enter the name in the text box that says 'Enter Author Name' then click 'Add Author'. To delete an author, select the author and click 'Delete Author'. To change the picture, double click the picture and select a new image (must exist on your computer). Click 'OK' to accept your changes.

  When editing the information for a game, you can create new categories and mechanics as needed by entering the new category or mechanic and selecting 'Add'.

• Search: Enter the text that you want to search for in the toolbar on the main display. As you type, the list will be filtered to display only the items that match the search terms. To restore the full list of items, clear out the text in the search box. If you want to search the internet for matching items, enter the search terms and select 'Search Amazon.com' or 'Search BoardGameGeek.com'. This will search for any item that matches the search string. The matches will be displayed in a list.
• Advanced Search: For board games, you can search for games that have a particular title, author, category, or mechanic. And for a game duration and allowed number of players. To perform this search, select the 'Games' tab on the main screen and press the 'Advanced Search' button. The search dialog will be displayed.
  
  Enter a set of criteria and select 'Search Full Collection'. This will find all games in your collection that meet all the criteria you entered. The 'Search Within Results' button will look for games matching the given criteria within the games already found. 'Search Collection and Append to Results' will leave the existing games in the list and will add games that match the given criteria in your collection to the list. So, if you wanted to find games in either the Economic OR Exploration category, you would select Economic, press 'Search Full Collection', select Exploration and press 'Search Collection and Append to Results'. If instead you wanted to find games that were Economic AND Exploration and took less than an hour to play, you would put 0 and 60 in the play time fields, select the Economic category and press 'Search Full Collection', then you would select the Exploration category and press 'Search Within Results'.
• Sort: Click the column header to sort by that field. Click again to sort in the other direction. The sort is 'Stable' by default. This means that if you are searching by Author and you have multiple books with the same Author, those books will remain in their existing order. So you can sort by Title and then by Author and have all book by the same Author sorted by title. If you don't care about the order of the items with the same Title, you can turn off stable sorting under the options menu. Stable sorting is considerably slower.
• Update Blank Data: You can fill in missing data by re-querying the book, DVD or board game at Amazon or BoardGameGeek. If you have accidentally lost data from an item, you can click the 'Update Blank Data' button on the toolbar or select 'Update Blank Data' from the 'Edit' menu to fetch missing fields. This will only replace fields that are blank.
• Update All Data: You can replace all existing data by re-querying the book, DVD or board game at Amazon or BoardGameGeek. If you corrupt data for an item, you can select 'Update All Data' from the 'Edit' menu. This will replace any field where Amazon/BoardGameGeek has data.
